The Para volleyball Federation of India in association with Balaji Media Group emerged successful in hosting the First Para beach Volleyball Senior standing National championship from September 27-29. This event, was hosted on the sandy beaches Of Malpe, Udupi in Karnataka. The three day event was hosted by PVFI in association with Karnataka State volleyball Association for the physically challenged.
The extraordinary athletes participated from 15 states, and represented their respective teams. More than 200 players took part in the event. The state teams that participated included Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, West Bengal, Kerala, Jharkhand and Delhi.
Team Tamilnadu emerged Victorious in this tournament and will go ahead to participate and represent Team India in the proposed World Volleyball series to be hosted at Goa.
The championship coincided with the World Tourism day, which was celebrated on Malpe Beach. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Jaimala, who is the Minister for Women and Child Development, Empowerment of Differently abled and Senior citizens ( Government of Karnataka).
Why Para sports?
The importance of Parasports can be traced back to two centuries back, when able bodied athletes would lose limbs or become deformed in the event of an epidemic outbreak/ war. These athletes would still know the skills of the game and wanted to participate, thereby giving rise to parasports.
